01 ALAIN'S CLIFF

open water diver advanced open water diver technical diver cliff coral rich life

DEPTH: Diving depth on this cliff is from 20 to 40 m but the cliff goes down to maximum 90 m.
DIFFICULTY: Difficulty of this dive depends mostly on conditions and currents but is usually accessible for beginners as well for experienced divers
VISIBILITY: From 30 to 50 m. crystal clean water
CURRENTS: Sometimes especially during low season current are strong and can make a problems for beginners.
SPECIAL PERMITS: No special permits needed
TYPE OF DIVE: Cliff dive
RECOMMENDATION: One of the best Cliff dives you will ever find. Huge Gorgonia coral fans everywhere. One of though dives.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVE

Alain's cliff is one of most famous cliff dives in Croatia and with the good reason. Start the dive on a plato which is around 5 to 9 m depth swimming in the direction of open sea. You come to the end of plato which finishes with direct drop off from 8 m down to a 90 m. This is probably the closest feeling to flaying you will ever experience, the magic of this cliff is visibility. It is so crystal clear that you can in fact see almost entire cliff in one glance, from surface to the bottom. It can take your breath a way. When you come on the depth between 20 and 40 m, depending on your experience and diving category, balance your buoyancy nicely. On one place cliff breaks and makes a vertical canyon full of caves and gorgonia coral fans. Usually on this place there is a school of different bigger fish. During entire length of the cliff there are clouds of small fish all around. After some swimming cliff brakes again and goes directly toward near by island V. Smokvica. This is the place where current is usually strongest. Once you pass the curve currant suddenly stops. Just by following the cliff which gradually goes in to s small bay on the island all the way up to 5 m depth.

TIPS & TRICKS

Wach out for your depth, visibility is so good in some periods that it can trick you in going too deep. Take extra time to adjust your equipment still on the dive boat, so once you jump in the sea you are ready for the dive. If the currant is strong get as close to the cliff as possible and watch out for your breathing rate. V. Smokvica, in translation Big fig, was a restricted military island until recently so the life around it is still not affected by people too much.

POSSIBLE TO SEE

Scorpion fish, moray eels, octopuses, different corals, colorful algae, schools of fish, spiny lobster, forkbeards, red mullets, lots of cracks and holes to peak in to, on occasion bigger fish.

02 TORPEDO DIVE

phot dive

cliff advanced open water diver cliff coral

DEPTH: 15 to 46 m
DIFFICULTY: All diving categories
VISIBILITY: 30 m
CURRENTS: Milde
SPECIAL PERMITS: No special permits needed
TYPE OF DIVE: Torpedo wreck and cliff dive
RECOMMENDATION: very interesting diverse dive

DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVE
On V.Smokvica island in front of Rogoznica between Alains cliff and Blue Gorgonia dive is one nice unique dive. Dive starts over a steppy cliff over sme big builders (stone formations) all the way to 39 m where you will see big 9 m long torpedo broken in two. This is WWI torpedo and it is rear to se even in museums. This torpedo was most probably fired from submarine shooting at ascaping ship. Torpedo obviusly missed the target and slowly sunk down between two rocks where it is still today.
Entire motor and driving mechanism are visible. From Torpedo you slowly reduce your depth and keep the cliff on your left hand side. You will again come over big builders (stone formations) around wich you will see lots of life. Big forkbeard is hiding in her litle cave wich scorpion fish is protecting, scools of smaler fish souraound one stone wich goes from 20 to 8 m depth. This combination of torpedo wreck and big builders full of life make this dive great.

TIPS & TRICKS

It is important to come emedietly on begining of the dive on Torpedo so you do not accumulate deco time, of course OWD can not see torpedo but can engoy builders with loads of fish.

POSSIBLE TO SEE

Scorpion fish, octopuses, schools of fish, forbears, lots of cracks and holes to peak in to, congers.

03 GORGONIA CLIFF

open water diver advanced open water diver technical diver cliff coral rich life anfora

DEPTH: Diving depth on this cliff is from 10 to 40 m but the cliff goes down to maximum 60 m
DIFFICULTY: Difficulty of this dive depends mostly on conditions and currents but is usually accessible for beginners as well for experienced divers
VISIBILITY: From 30 to 50 m. crystal clean water
CURRENTS: Sometimes especially during low season current are strong and can make a problems for beginners
SPECIAL PERMITS: No special permits needed
TYPE OF DIVE: Cliff dive
RECOMMENDATION: Great cliff

DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVE

Gorgonia cliff is located on the same island as Alain's cliff but is very different. The dive starts on the south- east part of the island on just 5m depth. After a short swim toward the south side of the island you will come on the first ''step'' from 7 to 15 m. and than on the cliff which starts with the vertical canyon From there on rocks form shelf's with the cuts underneath where you can peek in and in some, even enter entirely. In one moment, you will come over the big Gorgonia fans which expend on entire height of the cliff ... a great view. It depends on the strength of the current on which point of the dive will the dive guide turn around and head back toward the dive boat. Entire dive follows the shape of the island V.Smokvica (translation: Big fig) so it's not hard to orientate.

TIPS & TRICKS

Diving centers in the area sometimes make drift dives on this location which proves how strong the current can be. Usually under 20 m. there is no current but as you reduce the depth suddenly current starts pulling you in the opposite direction. Trick is to empty your jacket and go as close to the bottom as possible so you are protected from the currant from the surrounding rocks. There are also plenty of smaller rocks to hold on to.

POSSIBLE TO SEE

Scorpion fish, moray eels, octopuses, different corals, colorful algae, schools of fish, spiny lobster, forkbeards, red mullets, lots of cracks and holes to peak in to, on occasion bigger fish.

VISIBILITY: 25 to 40 m
CURRENTS: Sometimes little currant on depth down to 5 m
SPECIAL PERMITS: No special permits needed

Wreck is located near the island of M.Smokvica so there is no need to dive in to blue. Dive starts form 3m depth. From there you come on the first part of the wrack which is a stern of the ship. Notice a steering wheel still attached on its original place. Circling the wrack is usually a school of fish and on occasion a few octopuses. After circling around the wrack you continue swimming for 3 min and come on the second part of the wreck which is the deck or the ship which flew of during the explosion of the torpedo which sank it. Here you will for sure find a few Scorpion fish in the sand around the wreck. After swimming over the wreck you will come on the third part, which is already on 9 m depth, this is a usual hide out for octopuses.

TIPS & TRICKS

This Rumanian ship was sank by the torpedo during 2 world war most probably by mine or airplane torpedo. By the legend it was carrying chocolate and biscuits so it got named Sweet wrack. Especially nice during the night dive, when you can see Jon Dory's, Labstorgs and all sorts of small crabs.

POSSIBLE TO SEE

Scorpion fish, octopuses, leaf fish, colorful algae, Jon Dory's, langouste, schools of fish, congers and forkbeards

07 MIKES DIVE

open water diver advanced open water diver cliff coral rich life

DEPTH: Diving depth on this cliff is from 20 to 40 m but the cliff goes down to maximum 65 m
DIFFICULTY: Difficulty of this dive depends mostly on conditions and currents but is usually accessible for beginners as well for experienced divers
VISIBILITY: From 20 to 40 m. sometimes some sediment floating
CURRENTS: There can be some current but usually doesn't make problems for divers
SPECIAL PERMITS: No special permits needed
TYPE OF DIVE: Cliff dive
RECOMMENDATION: Colorful cliff with a cave and a canyon specially attractive because of vertical drop off

DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVE

In the middle of the sea there is a big underwater reef which comes up to 5 m. depth. On the southwest side, where you start the dive, is a vertical cliff. As you descend down you will come on to a cave on around 32 m. depth. The cave is big enough for one diver to enter but diving guides do not allow it because of big risk that you will damage the walls covered in different colorful corals. Usually inside of the cave there is few spiny lobster whose red white moustache you can see on the ceiling of the cave. As you continue the dive you will come on the biggest part of the cliff with orange gorgonia fans and lots of life on and around it. Than suddenly cliff breaks right and you come on a deep crack in the stone almost wide enough for a diver to enter. This crack is usually a hide out for bigger fish. As you come on the top of the cliff on 19 m. depth, bottom gradually goes toward the top of entire reef up to 5 m. On the top of the reef there is a plateau with interesting stones and lots of life surrounding them, especially octopuses, nudibranchs, snails and golden zoanthids.

TIPS & TRICKS

Watch out for the current as you swim on your way back toward the top of the reef . If you peek in to cracks be sure there is no moray eels or congers inside. Next to the cliff on around 45 m. dept there is a wreckage of a working platform looking like an arrow. Platform is around 40 m length, 17 m. width and 5 m. height.

POSSIBLE TO SEE

Scorpion fish, octopuses, different corals, colorful algae, schools of fish, cat sharks, spiny lobster, nudibranchs, snails and golden zoanthids, lots of cracks and holes to peak in to.

On Mulo dive current is usually there. If diving leader knows the dive he can start it in relatively calm sea. There are two dives you can do without changing boat location. Both dives start from few meters depth between big rocks which form small channels. As you go on you will pass over few steps, each few meters height, until around 20 m when you come on the top of the 20 m cliff full of life. Cliff is entirely covered with different organisms in beautiful colors. There are lots of holes and cracks where you can see moray eels, congers and lots of octopuses. First dive goes down to 30 meters on the cliff and back toward the boat. Second dive is shallower and goes all around the island Mulo.

TIPS & TRICKS

Current on this dive is always there and it can be really strong. Do not go wondering away from the dive leader, for if you miss the turn back point current can take you and than it will be a problem swimming back. On this small island there is Austro-Hungarian Light house built in 1873 looking really great. Today this light house is fully automatic, but in the old times there was a family living on it all year long. Watch out for fishing nets.

During Croatian - Serbian war in 1992 Galeb jet planes where mainly used by JNA (Jugoslavian National Army) for scouting but as in JNA Croatians where majority of pilots JNA head shortage of good pilots. So This Galeb Airplane same as two others came too close to anti aircraft battery between Rogoznica and Primosten. After it was hit by rocket it fell in Movar harbor on only 8 m dept. It was in fairly good state but local fisherman and people came and rip it apart and took paces as war souvenirs ??? I still today know in which garden you can find a peace of a wing or cockpit.

Dive itself is very simple. You start going over the wreckage and it pays to be slow and look at details. You will see foot pedals which have handel's for piloting plane if pilot is shot in the back and lost usage of his legs... eh, standard issue in tough times. 18. ZAGREB WRECK

TRIMIX technical diver cliff coral rich life depth
55 to 70 m

This wreck lies like still sailing and is in great shape and preserved.
It is possible to penetrate it in the cargo area and in the blown up area. It is entirely covered by sponges and by lots of life so gives a great opportunity for the photography as well. Zagreb was half passenger half cargo ship and the main cargo was nuts.
The French submarine Archimede, hit it on a nice quiet night with the torpedo during WW1, 14. 01. 1917. Everyone in the engine room and on the stern of the ship instantly died as tremendous explosion shacked a peaceful cold winter night. Torpedo hit the propellers and the helm, which mead a shop first lift toward the the bow and them in meter of minutes sink with the stern down.
The coast was just couple of hundred meters distant but still captain A. Tuchtan, second officer Remo Adamić, 13 members of the crew and 43 passengers lost there life on that cold night.
Zagreb was built in small village Alloa in Scotland, length 52,8 m, wide 7,84m, height 3,6 m, 537 brt, 287 nrt, 500 tdw, steam machine 800 HP, speed 11,5 knouts.

Because of the small depth for trimix diving and long bottom time it is perfect for trimix courses and dives.

SPECIAL PERMITS: No special permits needed
TYPE OF DIVE: Cliff and wreckage
RECOMMENDATION: Interesting dive for all divers, lots of different life

DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVE

On Grbavac there is a possibility of making three different interesting dives. One of the most interesting ones is a combination of a cliff and wreck dive. You start your dive just on few meters under the dive boat and gradually come to the cliff full of small caves and cracks. Here is a possibility of seeing lots of lobsters and a few moray eels. After the cliff there is a small reef which comes from the deep all the way up to 5 m. depth. You should maintain depth down to 20 m. as you go around the reef and you will come over the wreckage of one ship. This ship was most probably transporting coal and today this coal covers a big peace of the bottom from which different parts of the wrack are still visible. This wrack is nothing special but there is a lots of interesting life hiding in almost every whole.

TIPS & TRICKS

This dive is a little bit tricky in orientation as you change your direction many times. Also the reef which goes directly in the opposite side of the island contributes to the confusion, so ask the dive guide to describe the dive before jumping in the sea.

47. NINUCCIA - THE QUEEN OF ALL WRECKS

TRIMIX technical diver cliff coral rich life

NEWS ABOUT NINUCCI

As it seams (name verification coming in few days) Ninuccia was build in 1910 Genova.
It was a steemer with 4583 tsl.
It was owned by Giuseppe Gavarone di Genova.
It is logged in Maritime register in Genova.

Later during the SWW she was commissioned by Gegion Marina as back up boat for transport (we still do not know what was her final cargo).
8 january 1942 during her passage from Split to Rijeka around 12:00 she was intercepted by english submarine Thorn just in front of Rogoznica. Thorn tried to sink it by his gun fire but after the boat cough on fire he torpedoed Ninuccia. Torpedo hit 20 m of the stern of the boat and sunk it immediately. We are truing to find a photo of Ninuccia realy hurd and on the end of the week you will have some underwater photos as well

Submarine Thorn was not destened for any nicer faith.

On the 7th August 1942 HMS Thorn encountered the Italian torpedo boat Pegaso, escorting the steamer Istria from Benghazi, 30 miles south west of Gaudhos Island, off southern Crete. At 1255 an escorting aircraft was seen to machine-gun the sea’s surface and Pegaso moved in to investigate. Just four minutes after the aircraft’s attack the Pegaso picked-up a contact and carried out seven attacks after which contact was lost. HMS Thorn failed to return from the patrol and is believed to have been lost in this attack.

BIGGER THAN ENYONE EXPECTED

This wreck has been found by red coral diver Tonci Najev around 10 years a go, but as he head a very short dive on it he did not have time to find out any information on this wreck and never dived it since.
After the re-discover dive on 30.05.2008 by Borko Pusic, on 08.06. a Trimix exploring dive took place.
Ninuci lies on it's side with bottom side on around 100 m and top side on 79 m.

The first thing which hits you after 4 min dive in to the blue, when the wreck contours take shape in front of you is:
OOO MAN IT IS BIG.
In fact it is so big that until now fisherman regarded it as the underwater cliff.
It is so big that its hull looks like bottom with no end.
It is so big that when you put a light in it's cargo area your light can not detect anything except empty space..
It is so big that in 10 dives you can not see it all.

So now that DC PONGO found it after two years of searching and dived on it, it is finally going to become a Trimix accessible dive.
Our dive was with only 11 min bottom time and in this time we where just able to search a 20 m length of it which seams like drop in the ocean.

In next days we will try to come on the stern or bow of the wreck to start establishing its real size, purpose, history, events which lead to its downfall and preservation. Even the name NINUCI we have to verify and discover what happened with the crew.
How ever we look at it this wrack together with Zagreb wrack, it makes Rogoznica one of the best places for technical divers in Adriatic. There will bee much more to write about this in future days.
